lucy family economics 101.

is sarah kate failing lucy fam econ 101?
maybe. here are some recent statements made by our little lady....

1) "mama, i NEED a snow white costume!" needs vs. wants: the first thing anyone learns in economics. sk - you NEED food, water, air, shelter. you do not NEED a costume of any type even though santa will probably bring you a snow white costume anyway. that being said, your statement is ultimately incorrect.

"what the heck, mom? i DO need a snow white costume. she's my new favorite and i don't already have one, so i need one. duh."

2)"mama, i NEED go to punkin patch get new punkin." hmmmm....this one is tricky. trey has even declared her current pumpkin as "sick." maybe she does need a new one, although her quality of life will not decrease if she just sticks with the old, sick one. gotta mark this statement wrong, sk.

"uh....say what, mama? i not wrong! dad already said we could go again. it's a need."

3) "i no want to take NAP!" this is big time wrong on all levels. first, a nap is both a NEED and a WANT so thinking that you don't want or need one is just wrong. you're 2. you need a nap. there are millions of people all over the world who want nothing more than to have a couple hours set aside in the middle of their day just to lay down in a cozy bed & nap. so everything about your statement is false.

"listen, mama. i not want to take naps because i wake up looking all scary. and then you come after me with a spray bottle and comb. i stand by my statement."

4) "i want to see pete, mama!" ding, ding, ding....you got one right! we are taking sk to disney on ice tonight and she desperately wants to see pete (you know, the villain from mickey mouse clubhouse - her favorite character). i don't know why she loves pete so much, she says he's "silly pete." unfortunately, i'm thinking pete will not make an appearance at tonight's performance.

"score! i got one right. and it was the one about my beloved pete. man i love that guy!"

so 1 out of 4. not good. #1 and #2 do not concern me. #3 and #4 are a little concerning. the whole nap thing concerns me because, even though she gets 12 hours of sleep at night, my sunday school co-teacher would say that sk is in "sleep debt." for every day she refuses to close those little eyes she is racking up hours of sleep debt. two years old....already in debt. concerning.

#4 is concerning even though her statement was correct. the fact that she likes pete the best, and hook the best, and the beast the best suggests that she may be on her way to being a girl who likes the "bad guys." very concerning. we'll keep an eye on that one.

fall recipe to share.

"pun-kin" muffins.
the recipe was given to me by cherie smith who is a co-chair of the "tasty treats" committee at sarah kate's school. these muffins are our "fall tasty treat" for the kids at school. i made 3 dozen last night by filling the muffin cups about 3/4 full. we needed more for tomorrow and i was able to make 4 dozen using this same recipe but filling the cups 1/2 full of batter. i volunteered to be a muffin-maker because i'm on the "tasty treats" committee, but the real reason is because i finally have an oven that i thought could handle the task....and it did....like a complete champ. "he" baked perfect muffins, he did not beep at me or display a weird message across his screen, he did not shut off on me....he did what "they" are meant to do. if he was showing off and trying to win me over then it worked. not only was i impressed but he may be my new best friend.

ingredients:

2 cups whole wheat organic flour
1 cup white flour
1/2 cup flaxseed meal
2 cups organic sugar
2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg

1 cup vegetable oil
4 organic brown eggs
2/3 cups water

1/2 cup organic unsweetened applesauce
1 can organic pumpkin

directions:
preheat oven to 350. combine dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. combine wet ingredients in a separate mixing bowl. mix wet into dry. (i just used my hand mixer to mix). add in pumpkin and applesauce. mix. pour into paper-lined muffin tins. bake for 15-20 minutes. i baked mine for 19 minutes using my oven's convection setting.

someone wanted "more muffin!" and i have to say, they are quite tasty.

you don't have to use organic ingredients obviously. it's just what i usually use when i'm cooking for the kiddo and having a 'whole foods' down the street makes it easy. and speaking of the kiddo and pumpkins and such, sarah kate was very worried about her pumpkin today when she discovered it had a little hole on its' surface. she asked for a band-aid so she could fix him up. she told him not to worry that he was all better. her obsession with her pumpkin (& pumpkins in general) is very interesting. our pumpkins are very well-loved. and yes, we have brought her little pumpkin inside. she likes to keep an eye on it.

a "sweeping booty" band-aid fixes everything.

the truth about the hair.

this is for sarah kate who is going to look back at her childhood pics and think that her hair only grew horizontally: it IS growing vertically sweet girl! you just have to see it in the tub to know that it really is! so i documented it tonight so you would know the truth about your childhood hair. right when dad pours the water on it to wash the conditioner out is the best time to know it's true length. it begins to coil back up a second later. sneaky little curls.

just two days ago:

so there you have it! the truth is out.

"pun-kin patch."

we went to the pumpkin patch this morning. we were actually supposed to go last week and then sk came down with a cold. note to self - don't tell your kid what your plans are just in case said plans fall through. everyday i hear, "go to pun-kin patch, mama? pick out my own pun-kin, mama?" imagine that phrase on repeat. i felt so bad that we have had to keep putting it off. finally we were able to go this morning and pick out our pumpkins. sarah kate found a section of sk-sized pumpkins and chose her very own. she's very proud. trey chose some ridiculously large pumpkin that i can't wait to watch him gut and carve....good luck! and i chose a regular ole round guy who i hope will bring me a "win" in our annual carving contest. i'm going to let sk paint her little pumpkin when we carve.

sitter?

i am a little "ditzy" and forgetful at times. my husband is not. that's why i have to document it when he slips. it makes me feel normal.

here's the conversation last night:
me: trey, don't forget that we are going to disney on ice next thursday.
trey: oh gosh, it's that soon?! october is flying by.
me: yep, i'm excited.
trey (completely serious): me too, have you already lined up a sitter for sarah kate?
-silence-
then of course we laughed and laughed.

"daddy said what????"

i can't wait to see her face when belle skates out.

i do believe she's going to really enjoy it! so, i think we'll let her tag along and save the sitter for another night.

my family always makes me laugh right when i need it.

the beach house curse.

easter 2011: what was supposed to happen - sk, katie and trey were to spend 4 nights over on amelia at our family beach house. what really happened - sk developed an ear infection while in folkston and the antibiotics given at urgent care did not work for the infection so we ended up in the ER instead...twice.

june 2011: what was supposed to happen - kriner girl's annual june beach vacay over on amelia at our family beach house which means lots of fun in the sun, sand & surf. what really happened - we got in one day of fun in the sun, sand & surf before sk developed an ear infection - no more fun in the sun. at least this time the urgent care dr. gave us better meds.

october 2011: what was supposed to happen - trey and i were going to drive sk and beau to folkston and drop them off to spend a weekend on the farm to enjoy mimi, papa, the cousins, the animals & the festival. trey and i were going to go over to amelia to stay at the family beach house to enjoy a relaxing, kid-free weekend full of naps, reading, and 2 yummy dinners at our favorite restaurants. what really happened - friday morning around 5a.m. sk wakes up with 102.7 degree fever.

what i conclude from all of this is this: the beach house is cursed. for the lucy family anyway. we should never plan to go there ever again. we should just let all of our other family enjoy it. plans to spend time there clearly makes my child sick. such a shame because up until april of 2011 we had such wonderful trips to the beach house. maybe we'll try again in 2012.

there is some good news:
1)sweet mimi is going to come up saturday and stay with us and keep sarah kate while trey and i have a dinner date. so glad sk will get to see mimi....she has been looking forward to being at their house, riding diamond and riding the golf cart, but at least she'll get to see mimi. the weather isn't supposed to be good down there this weekend anyway, so maybe sk won't miss out on too much;)

2) took sk to the dr. and she's doing well, she just has a little virus....her ears look great! 4 months since our last infection is really great news for her little ears. she just finished a 10-day round of antibiotics on wednesday for strep so i was so glad to hear that this isn't bacterial....didn't want to put her on antibiotics again when she was JUST on them.

3) we aren't dead - that's always a plus. in fact, sk is handling this little virus the same way she handled the strep...like a champ! she seems good. things can always be worse even though i was really looking forward to a weekend with just trey. last time we had a few days away was when we went to vegas in may and i had fun half the time and the other half i spent barfing because the tummy bug was trying to kill me.

4)going to the dr. means getting a sucker. sarah kate is in heaven. appointment was at 9:50....it's 12:30 and she's still working on that thing.

at this rate, her teeth will rot by the end of day. i'm trying not to be neurotic about it. she thinks they are so yummy and she was in fact a perfect patient this morning.

happy friday!!!

meet minnie mouse.

yesterday i introduced "the collector." today i'd like you to meet......"minnie mouse."

sk's mimi bought her a m.m. costume and sk is a big fan. she can't get over those big hands! so tonight before bed she had a fabulous time clapping her "hands" together with her dad and just being 'goofy'(no pun intended). and of course i just happened to have my camera handy.

and NO, we are not all princesses, fairies, smiles, giggles and just off in a glorious land of lala over here in the lucy house. sk can really throw some impressive and sassy fits. we are constantly working on our manners and controlling our temper & frustration. i'm rarely just dying to find my camera when she's being ugly, BUT when she's being the cutest little mouse to ever live, well, that's another story......

and just to give credit where credit is due....you can (barely) see the person in this picture who is always responsible for her biggest smiles and largest laughs. she's absolutely certain that he hung the moon.

"he'll sweep me off my feet. and i'll know he's the one, when he makes me laugh".
